Key Steps and Technical Points of PEEK Injection Molding


Polyether ether ketone (PEEK), as a high-performance engineering plastic, is widely used in fields such as aerospace, medical devices, and the automotive industry, due to its excellent high-temperature resistance, mechanical strength, and chemical stability. Material Preparation and Pretreatment


Before PEEK injection molding, the quality of the material must be ensured. PEEK is extremely sensitive to moisture; therefore, strict drying treatment is required before processing, usually drying for several hours at around 120°C, to avoid bubbles or other adverse effects during processing. It is generally recommended to dry at 150°C for 3-4 hours, and the water content after drying should be controlled below 0.02%.


Setting Heating and Pressure Parameters


The melting temperature of PEEK is around 340°C, so PEEK injection molding requires the injection molding machine to reach and precisely control this temperature. When setting the barrel temperature, it usually needs to be higher than PEEK's melting temperature to ensure the material can fully melt and flow evenly. Meanwhile, high pressure (usually between 1500 to 2000 bar) ensures that PEEK fully fills the mold, and detailed parts can also be completely filled.


Mold Design and Manufacturing


PEEK's high melting point and low thermal expansion coefficient require mold design to have good thermal conductivity and high dimensional stability. The design of the cooling system needs to be reasonable, allowing the product to quickly cool and solidify, and avoiding warping deformation or dimensional deviations caused by internal stress. Additionally, the polishing and coating treatment of the mold surface can improve the smoothness of the PEEK injection molding process, reducing the risk of mold sticking.


Process Control and Optimization


PEEK injection molding technology is renowned for its speed, repeatability, and efficient production of complex geometric shapes. PEEK machining parts have small tolerances and low rejection rates. Although the initial cost of injection molds is very high, PEEK injection molding has a low unit cost in mass production, making it an ideal choice for large-scale production.


Common Problems and Solutions


Problems that may occur during PEEK injection molding include bubbles, streaks, and warpage. These problems are usually related to the drying degree of the material, the setting of injection parameters, mold design, and cooling speed. By optimizing these factors, defects can be effectively reduced.


The PEEK injection molding process is a technically intensive process that requires precise operation and professional knowledge. Only by deeply understanding and mastering this process can the potential advantages of PEEK material be fully utilized, producing high-performance products that meet the demands of specific industries.
